Application area
The production of high-speed steels in the US is regulated by the standard A600−79. These are complex alloys based on the iron of carbon, chromium, vanadium, molybdenum, or tungsten, or their combinations, and in some cases also significant amounts of cobalt. The carbon and alloy content is balanced at levels to provide a high achievable solidification reaction, high wear resistance, high resistance to softening heat and good viscosity for efficient use in industrial cutting operations.
In industrial practice, two groups of cutting materials are considered:
• Recognized standard high-speed tool steel, which serves almost all applications in a variety of metal processing technologies;
• A small group of intermediate grade steels that are acceptable for limited metalworking applications that do not require heavy loads.

Classification of M and T
According to the American Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy (AISI), there are currently more than 40 separate classifications of high-speed tool steels. AISI has developed a system for the classification of high-speed tool steels, which contain tungsten in their composition.

Notation
High-speed tool steels according to ASTM A 600 are designated Ml, M2, M41, Tl, T15, etc. The sequence number in the designation of the semantic load does not. The chemical composition of such steels is given in the table:
