Technical specifications
Alpha-titanium alloys, like technically pure titanium, can not be heat treated and have good weldability. Distinctive features of such alloys:
• Low and medium mechanical strength;
• Sufficiently high impact strength;
• Good ductility;
• Excellent mechanical properties at cryogenic temperatures.
Alpha-titanium alloys have the highest corrosion resistance. With the increase in the concentration of alloying elements, Alpha-titanium alloys significantly increase their long-term strength (creep), and acquire increased resistance to oxidation.
Urgency of application
The main application of parts manufactured from Alpha titanium alloys is structurally complex spatial products to be welded. Stabilization of the α-phase occurs by the addition of alpha stabilizers (aluminum, oxygen, nitrogen or carbon) to titanium. With increasing percentage of oxygen in Alpha titanium alloys their strength increases. The addition of aluminum improves corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures, up to 550 ° C inclusive. At the same time, the density of the alloy decreases, but the excessive amount of aluminum in the alloy matrix increases its tendency to brittleness, therefore aluminum in Alpha titanium alloys should not be more than 8%.
The chemical composition of the most common grades of Alpha titanium alloys

Physical and mechanical properties
For the most used grades of alloys in question, they are summarized in the table: | |||
Brand alloy | A type | Application temperature (° C) | Yield strength (MPa at 20 ° C) |
Ti-5Al-2.5Sn | alpha | 430 | 890 |
Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V | alpha | 475 | 930 |
Ti-6Al-4Sn-4Zr-0.7Nb-0.5Mo-0.4Si | alpha | 600 | 960 |
Technological features of application
Titanium α-alloys have good tensile strength and creep resistance combined with moderate mechanical strength. Alloys are easily welded, but their performance in the hot state leaves much to be desired.
Plastic deformation of Alpha titanium alloys is mainly carried out in a hot state.
Titanium α-alloys are used for manufacturing blades of steam turbines, autoclaves and other products of process equipment operating at temperatures up to 480ºC, cryogenic pressure vessels, blades of air engine compressors, rocket fuel tanks and structural parts,
working for a short time at 600ºC, parts of gliders and jet engines, welded stator assemblies and hollow compressor blades.
