Requirements for chemical composition

Properties of instrumental alloyed alloys are regulated by GOST 5950−2000, GOST 801−78 and GOST 19265−83. The main is GOST 5950−2000, in which all alloyed tool steels are divided into three groups:

  • Steel for cutting and measuring tools, shallow and deep hardenability (examples — steel 7ХФ, ХВ4, 9ХС, ХВГ, etc.);
  • Steel for cold-formed stamps (including the impact tool). Examples — steel Х6ВФ, Х12М, 6ХВ2С and so forth);
  • Steel for hot deformation stamps (including the impact tool). Examples — steel 5ХНМ, 8Х3, 4ХМФС, 7ХВ2С and so forth).

Residual elements

In the chemical composition of steels according to GOST 5950−2000, the content of sulfur and phosphorus in the steel should not exceed 0.03% (of each element). As part of the electroslag remelting method, the sulfur content is up to 0.015%. The residual nickel content in steels of all grades not doped with nickel is allowed up to 0.35%, in steel grade 4X4VMFS — up to 0.60%. The residual copper content should not exceed 0.30%.

The production of tungsten-containing steels with residual molybdenum up to 0.30% (with a tungsten content of up to 3.0% in steel) and up to 0.50% (with a tungsten content of more than 3.0% in steel) is allowed with all other requirements of this standard. In steel not alloyed with tungsten, vanadium, molybdenum and titanium, the content of tungsten and molybdenum is allowed up to 0.20% of each (with the exception of steels of grades 5ХНМ and 5Х2МНФ) of vanadium — up to 0.15% and titanium up to 0.03%.

For steels of grades 5ХНМ and 5Х2МНФ partial replacement of molybdenum by tungsten is allowed at the rate: one mass fraction of molybdenum is equivalent to two mass fractions of tungsten.

Marking, GOST 19265−73

A distinctive feature of the conventional designation of high-speed steels is the presence of the letter P before the beginning of the marking (for example, P6M5, P9K6, P18, etc.).

At the request of the consumer, the steels P6M5 and P6M5F3 are produced with nitrogen doping (mass fraction of nitrogen from 0.05% to 0.10%). In this case, the notation marks — P6AM5 and P6A5F3.

Abbreviation

P means high-speed; the figure following the letter is the average mass fraction of tungsten; M — molybdenum, F — vanadium, K — cobalt, A — nitrogen; the digits following the letters mean, respectively, the mass fraction of molybdenum, vanadium, cobalt; Ш — electroslag remelting. In the designation of steel grades do not indicate the mass fraction:

  1. chromium — at any mass fraction,
  2. molybdenum — up to 1% inclusive,
  3. vanadium — in the brand Р18, Р6М5, Р9К5, Р6М5К5, Р9М4К8 and Р2АМ9К5,
  4. nitrogen — in the brands 11P3AM3F2 and P2AM9K5.
