Annealing, quenching and heat treatment of nitrided structural steel
Are you interested in annealing and quenching of nitrided structural steels from the supplier company AvecGlob? Here you will find interesting information on this topic.
Features of heat treatment of nitrided steels
Nitrided steels — doped, or with nitride-forming components in the composition — are predominantly low-carbon. Nitriding helps to increase their surface hardness. Such steels are used in applications where it is necessary to significantly increase the wear resistance of the surface.
Increased uneven distribution of nitride phases in the volume of nitrided steel forces heat treatment to give preference to processes of local hardening, which have increased accuracy. Therefore, for nitrided steels, it is more common to use not a general but a local hardening, using a spark or arc discharge as a heat source. Often used and hardening followed by annealing in the melts of salts.
Heat treatment in melts
This is a heat treatment process similar to hardening, but instead of carbon, nitrogen is used as the alloying element. The industrial process uses vacuum furnaces with a high pressure gas outlet for nitriding stainless steels. There are two versions of the process — for martensitic and for austenitic steels. These processes allow the use of low-grade steel, the strength of which is not lower than that of higher-carbon nitrided steels.
In comparison with standard hardening, hardening in melts has the following advantages:
Increases surface hardness without reducing corrosion-resistant properties;
Eliminates the generation of metal carbides in steel;
Increases resistance to wear, erosion and cavitation;
Improves high temperature strength;
It is an environmentally safe method of heat treatment due to the use of nitrogen as a process gas.

Electric spark and electric arc hardening
The process is usually combined with the manufacture of a cavity or hole in nitrided steel. The electrode has a cavity shape / hole configuration, and the working medium in which the heat treatment is performed is a solution containing nitrogen. In order for the electrical conductivity of the working medium to be minimal (which makes it possible to increase productivity and reduce the specific consumption of reinforcing electrodes), oil-soluble organic media are more often used. Such heat treatment is particularly often used for instrumental nitrided steels. Alloyed steels, in particular, containing nitride-forming compounds — titanium, aluminum, chromium, tungsten, vanadium, etc. — are particularly effective for electric spark or electric arc hardening.
Both processes are well regulated, but to eliminate embrittlement after such processing, low-temperature annealing is introduced.
