General information
Nitriding is a kind of thermochemical treatment, which is provided for in DIN EN 10052. In this case, the steel is in a nitrogen-radiating medium to produce a hard wear-resistant surface layer. During nitriding, the blanks are placed in an atmosphere that emits nitrogen, and, depending on the process,
are heated to a temperature of 500 to 550 ° C. At this temperature, rolling is maintained for several minutes to 100 hours. Subsequently, it cools slowly, and in the case of unalloyed steels — quickly.
Nitriding parameters
DIN EN 10052 provides that the achievable hardness of the edge of the surface depends on the material, and can be improved only by pretreatment, such as tempering with tempering temperatures above 570 ° C.
DIN EN 10052 does not limit the steel grade or the delivery condition (castings or forgings) for nitriding. The hardness is caused by nitrides built into the metal mesh. Particularly solid nitrides are formed with elements of aluminum, chromium, molybdenum, titanium and vanadium.
For low alloy steels, the increase in hardness is usually very low, but some corrosion protection is achieved and adhesion wear is reduced.
