Standard ASTM A588
This standard covers high-strength, low-alloy structural steel forms, plates and rods for welded, glued or bolted structures with atmospheric corrosion resistance. A heat analysis must be carried out in which low-alloy structural steel materials must meet the required chemical composition for carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, copper and vanadium. The steel samples are also subjected to a tensile test and correspond to the required values of tensile strength, yield strength and elongation.
The standard extends to profiles, plates and rods for welded or bolted structures made of the types of steel in question, but intended primarily for use in welded bridges and buildings where weight savings or increased durability are important. The atmospheric corrosion resistance of this steel in most environments is much better than that of carbon structural steels with or without copper addition. With proper exposure to the atmosphere, this steel is suitable for many applications in bare (unpainted) condition. This specification is limited to material with a thickness of up to 8 inches [200 mm] inclusive.
When welding steel should use a welding procedure suitable for steel and intended for use or maintenance.
For structural products made from a roll or tape and supplied without heat treatment or stress relief, additional requirements are applied, including additional testing requirements and reporting on additional test results (see standards A6 / A6M).
Additional standards
A6 / A6M for general requirements for catalytic steel rods, plates, molds and sheet packing. G101 Guidance on the evaluation of the corrosion resistance of the atmosphere of low-alloy steels. The ICS code is 77.140.10 (Steels with heat treatment). UN Code — UNSPSC 30263901 (High-strength low-alloy steel hot-rolled HSLA steel). ANSI / ASTM A 242 / A 242MA
This specification covers high-strength, low-alloy structural steel forms, plates and rods for a welded or bolted structure intended primarily for use as structural elements where weight savings (weight) or increased durability are important. Heat analysis is carried out in which steel samples must correspond to the required chemical compositions of carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur and copper. Atmospheric corrosion resistance should be evaluated on samples that are subjected to tensile tests and must meet the specified tensile strength, yield strength and elongation. For structural products made from a roll or tape and supplied without heat treatment or stress relief, additional requirements, including additional testing requirements and reporting of additional test results.
