Application of cemented structural steel
Are you interested in the use of cemented steels from the supplier company AvecGlob? Here you will find interesting information on this topic.
Cementation is used for steels with a carbon content of less than 0.25%. This process regulates the operational properties of steel to improve its operational durability
The essence of the carburization process
The process begins by heating the steel parts in the shaft furnace or a sealed atmospheric furnace. After reaching a certain temperature, which depends on the initial state of the steel and its future use, cement gases are introduced into the furnace. Heating continues until the correct amount of surface hardening is reached.
The components are then slowly cooled for quenching or quenching into oil. Oil quenching is used to minimize distortion, when components do not require much adjustment. Further quench hardening follows if the component needs a higher tolerance level.
Carburizing results
Cementation increases wear resistance, creating a strong surface while maintaining a softer core. The process is often performed after processing the parts, so when they are used, they remain durable.
Components that have a complex shape often bring the greatest benefit from carburization, since the material must be soft when molded, but once it is done, it must be installed in a more stable seat before use. The carburizing process generally leads to an increase in the thickness of the protective layer.
The final product after carburization is measured by the depth of the hardening zone, which is the thickness of the layer with an increased concentration of carbides.

Application of carburizing
The depth of the layer depends on the use of steel. Increased depth is used for thin-walled machine parts that need to be replaced frequently. For industrial transmissions, an increased depth of the carbide-enriched layer is required to withstand a heavier load. For the heaviest, shock loads (ball mills, rollers, guides and bearing surfaces), the depth of the layer is assumed to be maximum.
The increased depth of the carbide-containing layer does not necessarily mean that it will work better. For example, small parts of machines that require a relatively shallow carburizing depth may be too heavy or not flexible enough. This increases the risk of failure of such parts. Therefore, durability is ensured by an optimal combination of the depth and hardness parameters of the cemented layer.
