Gas cutting of metal

Gas cutting of metal

Are you interested in the technology of gas cutting of rolled metal, steels and alloys from the supplier company AvecGlob? Here you will find interesting information on this topic

The essence of the operation

Gas cutting is the most widely used industrial process of thermal cutting, as it can cut metal thicknesses from 0.5 mm to 250 mm, both in manual and mechanized modes. There are several options for the use of gases and nozzle designs that can significantly improve productivity in terms of cutting quality and cutting speed.

A mixture of oxygen and gas is used to preheat the metal to about 700 ° C to 900 ° C (for steel), which is well below its melting point.

A stream of pure oxygen is sent to the preheated zone, provoking an energetic exothermic chemical reaction between oxygen and metal to form iron oxide or slag. With the help of an oxygen jet, slag is removed, allowing the jet to penetrate through the material and continue the cutting process.

There are three basic requirements for oxygen-fuel cutting:

The ignition temperature of the material should be lower than its melting point;

The melting point of the oxide must be lower than the temperature of the surrounding material, so that the oxide can be mechanically blown off by an oxygen jet;

the oxidation reaction between the oxygen stream and the metal must be sufficient to maintain the ignition temperature;

Since stainless steel, cast iron and non-ferrous metals form refractory oxides, special powders are introduced into the flame, which reduce the melting temperature of the liquid slag.

Urgency of application

The process is used for small-scale cutting of metal products of various configurations and transverse dimensions, with medium requirements for accuracy and the need to minimize the financial costs of the process.

Supplier — AvekGlob Company — offers at affordable prices from the manufacturer various metals and alloys, blanks for which can be obtained using gas cutting. The assortment and the number of such blanks are completely determined by the customer’s wishes. The supplier guarantees the timely delivery of products to any address specified by the consumer

Process Requirements

When choosing a gas, follow the guidelines.

The cutting speed and the quality of the cutting edge are mainly determined by the purity of the oxygen flow. Thus, the design of the nozzles plays a significant role in protecting the flow of oxygen from sucking in there air from the atmosphere.

The combustion of fuel gas occurs in two different zones. In the inner cone or primary flame, the fuel gas combines with oxygen to form carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Combustion then continues in the secondary or external zone of the flame with the supply of oxygen from the air.

Thus, the fuel gases are characterized by:

flame temperature;

optimal gas / oxygen ratio;

presence of a certain flame atmosphere (better neutral or restorative).

The five most commonly used fuel gases are acetylene, propane, methyl acetylene propadiene, propylene and natural gas.
