Pressing of metals and alloy

Pressing of metals and alloy

Are you interested in pressing metals, steels and alloys from the supplier company AvecGlob? Here you will find interesting information on this topic /

The essence of the pressing process

Pressing (or extrusion) is a process used to create a form of a fixed cross-sectional profile. Pressing is carried out by compressing the metal in a closed cavity with a tool known as a press stamp using a mechanical or hydraulic press. During pressing, the workpiece undergoes compressive stresses. This makes possible high deformation without breaking the metal.

The cavity, in which the initial material (matrix) is contained, is covered with a wear-resistant material. This helps to withstand the high radial loads that are created when the material is pushed through the matrix.

Even very incompletely plastic metals and alloys, for example, zinc or magnesium, can be pressed into compression. The main material with which the pressing is performed are steel and alloys of medium and high plasticity — aluminum, copper, titanium, lead, tin, steel.

Types of pressing

The process is classified according to the treatment temperature (hot and cold pressing), and also depending on the direction of displacement of the press. If it coincides with the direction of movement of the metal, the pressing is called straight if the metal of the workpiece and the press stamp move in mutually opposite directions, then the opposite.

Urgency of application

Cold presses receive cases of aluminum tubes and cans for drinks, pipes of small sections, cylindrical billets of their plastic metals and alloys. The process provided that the tool is strong enough to withstand the stresses created by the deformation of the metal. Advantages of cold extrusion — higher strength of products, more accurate tolerances, better surface quality, no scale.

Hot pressing is performed at rather high temperatures, approximately 50 to 75% of the melting temperature of the metal. To ensure high tool life, a lot of grease is needed. Typical applications of the hot pressing process are parts of cars, building structures, aircraft, missile technology.

Advantages and limitations of pressing

The process is characterized by the maximum use of metal, significant savings in financial and material costs. In many cases, the pressed profiles do not need further finishing and finishing. Pressing produces products not only from solid blanks, but also from metal powders. The shape of the cross-section can be different, and is determined only by the profile of the hole in the matrix.

The complexity of the resulting product is determined only by the specific loads on the tool and the equipment’s power. Sometimes it is not possible to press the profile, since the nominal force of the press is greater than the available one. Also, the reason for replacing the pressing with another processing process is considered to be the low resistance of the tooling.
