Cross-section rolling of metals and alloys
Are you interested in rolling metals, steels and alloys from the supplier AvecGlob? Here you will find interesting information on this topic.
The essence of the process
Transverse rolling (or bulk rolling) is a technology in which both rolls of equipment rotate in one direction, and the rod is fed across, along the axis of the metal flow. The rolls are provided with a special type of threaded section, which is used to form the cavity of the cylindrical part, determined by the configuration of the sector stamp. The grasping of the metal by the tool and the stability of the transverse rolling process are due to frictional forces arising on the contact surface between the metal and the rollers.
In the case of transverse rolling, the metal is subjected to rotational motion relative to its axis and is thus processed in the transverse direction. Degree of deformation of metal can reach 60%.
A kind of cross-rolling — cross-helical rolling, with which you can get balls ball bearings. This is a continuous process, during which the initial cylindrical workpiece is deformed, which is gripped by screw rolls, as a result of which, gradually, when the rolls are rotated, the ball profile is formed. At the end of the working stroke, the end surfaces of the roll cut off the resulting product from the rest of the workpiece.
Urgency of application
Transverse rolling is used to make gear teeth and other parts, and rotational rolling is used in the manufacture of seamless rolling tubes, balls, axles and other solid bodies of revolution. Longitudinal rotational rolling is used for making drill bits, stepped shafts, taps, leaf springs, etc. The main products of hot rolling are the production of spanners.

Equipment
Transverse rolling is carried out on special mills, in which the axes of the upper and lower rolls constitute a certain angle between each other — up to 60 0. Rolls of piece goods are carried out with hot workpieces on special machines called forging rollers. Work rolls of rolls first make a turn towards the workpiece, grab it, roll it through the cavities of the sector stamps, and then reverse its movement. During the return stroke, the finished forging is manually or automatically removed from the die cavity.
Advantages and limitations of cross-rolling
When transverse rolling is achieved the continuity of the deformation process, and metal waste is practically absent (with the exception of end ones). The limitation is the complexity of the profiling of the working tool, as well as its small stiffness: therefore, the long rolls of the rolling mills are not characterized by high precision of production.
