Annealing, quenching and heat treatment of stainless steel
Are you interested in the heat treatment of stainless steels from the supplier AvecGlob? Here you will find the necessary information on this topic.
Stainless steels are usually subjected to heat treatment for stress relief, for hardening or annealing, to increase plasticity and corrosion resistance. The thermal treatment of stainless steel is carried out under controlled conditions to avoid carburization and decarburization.
Annealing
Annealing is used for the recrystallization of a working solution of austenitic stainless steels and the formation of chromium carbides. In addition, this treatment eliminates stresses arising during the previous treatment and homogenizes the welded seams from dendritic stainless steel.
Annealing of stainless steels is carried out at temperatures above 1040 ° C, but some types of steel can be annealed at lower, but controlled temperatures, given the grain size. The process takes place briefly to exclude the growth of grain in the structure of steel.
Stabilizing annealing is often carried out after normal annealing. Stabilization consists in precipitation of carbon in the form of carbides (more often — niobium and titanium). It occurs by additional annealing at temperatures from 870 to 900 ° C for 2−4 hours, followed by rapid cooling.
All ferritic and martensitic stainless steels can be annealed during heating in the temperature range of ferrite formation, or when heated above the critical temperature in the austenite range. Subcritical annealing can usually be carried out at temperatures from 760 to 830 ° C. The soft structure of spheroidized and ferrite carbides can be obtained by cooling the material at 25 ° C from the total annealing temperature for an hour, or by holding the material for an hour at the subcritical annealing temperature. Products that have undergone cold treatment after complete annealing can be annealed at subcritical temperatures in less than 30 minutes.
The grades of ferritic steel over the entire operating temperature range require a short recrystallization annealing at temperatures from 760 to 955 ° C.

Heat treatment in controlled atmosphere
Stainless steels are usually annealed in controlled conditions to reduce distortion of shape. This treatment can be carried out in a salt bath, but generally an annealing performed in a reducing environment is preferred,
Hardening
Like low-alloy steels, martensitic stainless steels are quenched with simultaneous austenization. The austenitization temperature is from 980 to 1010 ° C. At an austenitizing temperature of 980 ° C, the hardness first increases and then falls. The process is also performed to eliminate possible corrosion cracking of the steel.
Vacation
Martensitic stainless steels have a high content of alloys and, therefore, high hardenability. Full hardness can be achieved by air cooling at an austenitizing temperature, but hardening of large areas may require quenching in the oil. Hardened components should be released immediately after cooling at room temperature. In some cases, the components are cooled before processing at -75 ° C. Hardening of the martensitic steels is carried out at temperatures above 510 ° C, and then rapidly cooling the steels at temperatures below 400 ° C to avoid embrittlement.
