Milling of stainless steel
Are you interested in milling stainless steels from the supplier company AvecGlob? Here you will find the necessary information on this topic.
Features of milling operations performed with stainless steels
The technological modes of milling are determined by the type of steel. The following structural types of these materials are known:
Ferritic / martensitic steels;
Austenitic steels;
Duplex stainless steel.
The ease and quality of milling operations differ depending on the presence in the steels of certain alloying elements, heat treatment methods, as well as the production process of obtaining the initial blanks (forging, casting, rolling, etc.)
Ferritic and annealed martensitic stainless steels have the ability to be machined, which is comparable to low-alloy steels, and therefore recommendations for milling conventional steels can be used. The main problems when milling such steels are the presence of thermal cracks due to improperly selected coolant temperature, cut edges at the ends of the workpiece, the formation of burrs and poor surface quality.
The main criteria for the loss of quality of workpieces in the milling of austenitic and duplex stainless steels are chipped at the edges due to thermal cracks, incisions and lack of clarity in the design of the edges due to increased friction. This increases the roughness of the finished product.
Supplier — AvekGlob Company — offers to purchase assortment of milled products made from different grades of stainless and heat-resistant steels. Products can be bought at a price formed on the basis of European and world standards. Implementation is possible in bulk and retail, for regular customers, a flexible system of discounts operates.
Selection of technological equipment and milling modes
Most cutting tools that are made of high-speed steels can be used for milling austenitic and duplex stainless steel by simply selecting a special geometry and insert class.
Usually, cutters with round inserts or small input angles are used to minimize wear. It is recommended to use positive angles.
When milling stainless steels of martensitic grade, having increased hardness, the abrasive wear of mills increases, and thermal cracks appear on the workpiece. In such cases, use cutters with carbide inserts. For milling stainless steels that contain an increased percentage of nickel and are therefore more viscous, a more intensive feed should be used
For rough milling, high cutting speeds (150… 250 m / min) are used, and no emulsions are used. This eliminates the risk of crack formation.
In the case of finishing milling, apply an oil-cooling mist, and the amount of lubricant supplied is reduced. The purity of the milled surface increases as a result. Problems with thermal cracks during finishing are less, because the heat released in the cutting zone is lower.
Milling of stainless steels can also be made with a mineral-ceramic tool, however, the feed must not be small, since the wear of the mills increases.
