Manufacture of stainless steel
Are you interested in the production of rolled stainless steels from the supplier AvecGlob? Here you will find the necessary information on this topic.
Sequence of operations
The production of stainless steel includes a number of processes. For the production of stainless steel raw materials — iron ore, chrome, silicon, nickel, etc. — is melted in an electric furnace. This stage usually includes 8 to 12 hours of intense heat. The next step is that the mixture is cast into one of several forms. After various forming steps, the steel is heat treated and then cleaned and polished to obtain the desired finish. Then it is packed and sent to the producers who weld and join the steel to obtain the desired shapes.
Melting
The raw material is first melted in an electric furnace. This step usually requires 8 to 12 hours of intense heat. When the melting is finished, the molten steel is cast into semi-finished products. These include bars, plates, slabs, blooms, wire, sheet metal.
Plastic deformation
During this step, the steel passes through the molding operations, starting with hot rolling, in which the steel is heated, and passes through several pairs of rolls of rolling mills, respectively, sheet or bulk deformation.

Products can be bought at a price formed on the basis of European and world standards. Implementation is possible in bulk and retail, for regular customers, a flexible system of discounts operates.
Heat treatment
After rolling stainless steel, most brands must undergo an annealing step. Annealing is a heat treatment in which steel is heated and cooled under controlled conditions to relieve internal stresses and soften the metal.
Some steels are heat treated to improve strength. Such heat treatment requires careful monitoring, since even small changes from the recommended temperature, time or cooling rate can seriously affect the properties. Lower aging temperatures create high strength with low fracture toughness, temperature aging gives a stronger, harder material.
The heating rate to reach the aging temperature (482… 537 ° C) does not affect the properties, in contrast to the cooling rate. Stationary cooling (rapid cooling) can increase strength without significant loss of strength. One such method involves water where steel hardens in an ice water bath (1.6 ° C) for at least two hours.
The type of heat treatment depends on the type of steel. Austenitic steels are heated to temperatures above 1037 ° C, depending on the thickness. For increased rolled products, quenching with water is used, whereas for thin sections, air cooling or air blasting is used. According to this method, the steel is aged for several hours at a temperature of 815 to 871 ° C.
Annealing causes scaling. It can be deleted with several processes. One of the most common methods is etching, a bath with nitric acid is used. In another method — electrical cleaning — electric current is applied to the surface using cathode and phosphoric acid, and the scale is removed.
Finishing operations
Surface treatment is an important specification for stainless steel products and is critical for applications where the appearance is also important. Some finishing surfaces also simplify the cleaning of stainless steel, which is obviously important for sanitary applications. The smooth surface obtained by polishing also provides better corrosion resistance. On the other hand, for rough lubrication, rough finishing is often required, as well as to facilitate further production steps.
