Contact corrosion of stainless steel
You are interested in the contact corrosion of stainless steels from the company — supplier Alekhlas? Here you will find the necessary information on the topic.
The essence of the phenomenon
Contact corrosion occurs when a tight or power contact parts made of stainless steel with other products. what happens, in particular, with any metal. When using stainless steel tools may experience a small dot or circle areas of a brownish-blue shades with slight corrosion in the contact areas.
This type of contact corrosion is often mistaken for pitting. However, upon closer examination it becomes clear that the center spot of rust no holes. Rather, in these places the surface is slightly smooth.
However, the classic variant of contact corrosion occurs in a material combination with stainless steel and non-ferrous metals (brass, copper, bronze). Depending on the situation, this leads to the formation of deposits in the contact areas and, mainly, beyond them.
The origins and causes
When using only stainless steel tools,
contact corrosion is observed only in washing machines. Microtine at the contact points leads to partial abrasion of the passive layer. Thus, corrosion protection is temporarily removed in these places, which in turn leads to the above-described changes of the surface. Contact corrosion is often called fretting corrosion.
In the classic material combination (stainless steel in contact with non-ferrous metals) when used old and new tools, this type of corrosion occurs during cleaning of defective products after use.
Supplier — the company Alekhlas — offers to purchase assortimente metal, made of different grades of stainless steels. Products can be purchased at a price formed on the basis of European and world standards. Possible, wholesale and retail, for regular customers a flexible system of discounts.
Recommendations on elimination of
When using only stainless steel tools, there is no need to remove the symptoms of corrosion by contact, since such changes of the surface due to their low severity do not pose a risk of losing stability. Experience shows that such surface symptoms usually disappear after several cycles of treatment. If you use acidic (neutralizing agents), these deposits usually dissolve immediately, which in turn accelerates the passivation process.
If contact corrosion occurs as a result of protective layer damage in Nickel or chrome-plated instruments, there is usually no means (for example, in the form of repairs).
Preventive measures
Reduced to the following conditions:
Elimination of vibrations;
Timely replacement of Nickel-or chrome-plated items from badly damaged surfaces;
Reducing the humidity of the environment.
Contact corrosion is particularly dangerous in surgical practice, when the damaged part of the tool in contact with the skin surface of the patient.
