Electron beam melting of metals
Are you interested in the technology of electron beam melting of metals from the supplier company AvecGlob? Here you will find interesting information on this topic /
Principle of electron-beam melting of metals and alloys
A thin layer of metallic powder is selectively melted by an electron beam. Parts of the powder are laid in certain layers.
Electron beam melting is similar to laser melting, but works with an electron beam instead of a laser. The machine distributes a layer of metal powder to the construction platform, after which it is melted by an electron beam. The assembly platform is then lowered, and the next layer of metal powder is on top. The process of applying the powder and melting, when necessary, is regenerated, and the parts are laid in a layer in the powder layer.
For the melting of an electron beam,
which fix the details and overhanging structures on the assembly platform. This allows you to transfer heat from the place where the powder melts. This reduces the thermal stresses. The assembled structure can be filled with several parts that are built in parallel, if they are all attached to the assembly platform.
Urgency of application
Melting by electron beam is used to produce metals with increased density and mechanical properties. However, the availability of components is usually limited, and the process is rather slow and expensive.
Compared with laser melting, electron beam produces less thermal stress in finished products and, therefore, does not require subsequent heat treatment transitions. Compared with laser fusion, the technology in question does not provide an equally good surface finish.
Areas of application — small products in small-scale or single production.

Electron beam melting equipment
Installations for electron beam melting include an electron gun with a power of up to 3000 watts to heat the powdered metal and layer after layer to print details of this metal. Several layers of metal powder are simultaneously melted in the heated chamber. Virtually the entire depth of the finished casting mold is not accompanied by the appearance of shrinkage stresses.
The design of the furnaces uses Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion technology, which allows to melt various materials — from light metals to refractory alloys. The position of the beam, spot diameter and power are generated for each layer, which is then «printed» by moving the electron beam along the surface of the powder layer. After completion of the layer, the reservoir for the assembly is lowered, the fresh powder spreads over the working surface and the process continues until the component is complete. High temperatures (from 700 to 1000 ° C) used in the consolidation of the powder material of the powder layer lead to The absence of stresses when the metal is cooled to room temperature.
