Tig welding stainless steel tungsten electrode
Are you interested in welding stainless steels with a tungsten electrode (TIG) from the supplier company AvecGlob? Here you will find the necessary information on this topic.
Basic principles
Welding of stainless steel is complicated by their low thermal conductivity, and can cause such defects as deformation, metal embrittlement and its oxidation. To control the heat input and welding technology TIG and stainless steel, the following technological methods are used:
Correct installation. It ensures that only the required amount of aggregate is used. Do not add metal filler without adding heat;
The filler metal. The thicker the wire, the more heat it takes to melt it. Therefore, the diameter of the aggregate must be less than the base metal. To ensure the integrity of the weld, the filler material and the base material must be chemically compatible and have similar mechanical properties;
The size of the electrodes. The choice of the correct size of a tungsten non-consumable electrode depends on variables such as polarity, current strength and the thickness of the base metal. Follow the recommendations of the manufacturer of electrode wire;
The geometry of the electrode — the taper should not be more than 2. This creates a focused arc that is capable of producing deep, thin balls and a narrow zone of thermal impact. If the electrode has a taper more than 2.5 times its diameter, the arc can branch. This results in less penetration and a wider zone exposed to heat;
Dimensions of the bath with a melt. Its depth should be greater than the thickness of the base metal. To eliminate craters, it is recommended to reduce the current at the end of the welding process, and add more aggregate;
Gas flow and speed The flow of gas must completely surround the surface of the bath with the melt until the orange color disappears. The stream also cools the weld pool and electrode.

Managing TIG process parameters
When using pulsed gas arc welding, reverse polarity of direct current should alternate strong and weak, background pulsations.
When the current pulsates, the peak current provides good heat transfer and penetration into the thickness of the blanks to be joined, while the background current keeps the arc and allows the welding zone to cool, preventing deformation, embrittlement and precipitation of the carbides.
The higher the frequency, the narrower and more concentrated the cone of the arc. In addition, the pulse rate limits the heat input. Conventional TIG welding machines limit the size of pulses. To increase this parameter, welding inverters are used, which are capable of producing hundreds or thousands of pulses per second.
