Welding of tantalum
Are you interested in welding tantalum and its alloys from the supplier company AvecGlob? Here you will find the necessary information on this topic.
Features of tantalum welding
Commercially pure tantalum is soft and ductile and does not have a pronounced transition from the plastic state to brittle, and vice versa. The material should be well cleaned before welding, and the best quality of the connection is achieved using the methods of electric welding with tungsten non-consumable electrode. It is recommended to weld in an inert gas stream.
Some tantalum products are produced by the powder metallurgy method, which can lead to porosity in the weld seam. The arc extinguishing product has no porosity. The filler wire is usually not used for welding tantalum, and for the best results, the reverse polarity of the electric current is used. To initiate an arc, use a high frequency. It is recommended to use helium from inert gases, which ensures maximum penetration of heat into the welded seam.
The purity of the surface is of paramount importance. Pollution from impurities in shielding / purging, inert gas or other sources (weldments, machining, etc.) should be minimized.
Welding of tantalum has much in common with the welding of niobium, molybdenum, titanium and zirconium. After welding, annealing is recommended.

Welding of tantalum alloys
The rules for welding such alloys are in many respects similar to the recommendations for welding tantalum. Before welding, the surfaces must be absolutely clean, and when welding, air does not come into contact with the heated material. Cleaning is usually done with chemicals. To remove all traces of chemicals, cleaned surfaces should be rinsed with water. After cleaning the parts, they must be protected against re-oxidation. This is best done by storing in an inert gas chamber or in a vacuum chamber.
Four technologies are used for welding tantalum alloys:
Electron-beam welding — requires modern equipment. Large welding is carried out in a vacuum chamber. Welds are of good quality, characterized by narrow welding zones and good penetration. The method is used for complex, hard-to-get welded seams;
Application of the chamber with a blowing stream. The method is used for welding dimensional structures, as well as when the connections are too complicated to provide for welding under the open sky. The camera body is made of polyethylene sheet and camouflage tape. Argon displaces or mixes trapped air with a level at which welding can be performed;
Dry box or vacuum chamber for cleaning. Dry box provides the most uniform atmosphere of inert gas. The details are placed in a box. The camera closes and a vacuum forms inside it;
The usual practice is to pump air. Then the box is filled with argon with a high degree of purity to a small positive pressure. Welding in the open requires special precautions. Only relatively simple connections are possible, allowing adequate screening. It is necessary to protect the arc, the metal from the front, from the side and the cooling of the weld seam behind and below.
